I wanted to write a comment about the wonderful drum that Jonttu made for me.
I decided to obtain a drum after visiting Finland and Sweden in the summer of 2010. So much of the local folklore and tradition was centered around this one tool and yet its presence has all but disappeared with the arrival of organized religions to these lands a few centuries ago.
However, fortunes have smiled on me and I was able find Jonttu who willingly took on this task. Not only did she approach it with tradition and care, asking me many questions to find out exactly what I wanted, but she also kept in touch and we had some wonderful discussions together.
Now that the drum is at my home and I had a chance to work with it a few times, I am learning a new (and at the same time very old!) skill. The sound the drum makes is deep and slow, unlike any other that I have heard in the past. It is truly magical.
Jonttu: you did a wonderful job and I cannot thank you enough for your craft. This drum far exceeds my expectations and I am happy to recommend your work to anyone.
