Paulin rumpu Paul's drum

Tämän rummun tein ystävälleni Paulille. Hän ehdottomasti tarvitsee rumpua!

Rummun kehä on kolminkertaista koivua, nahka poroa, jonka värjäsin kurkumalla ja petsillä. Kehä on ulkoa öljytty ja sisältä petsattu punaiseksi. Korpin ja ahman jäljen maalasin öljyvärillä. Rumpukapula on tehty koivun juuresta.

Rumpu on hyvin aistillinen ja vahva - ja todellakin tekee sen tiettäväksi.

I made this drum for my dear friend Paul. He really needs a drum!

The hoop is made of three layers of birch, the skin is reindeer dyed with turmeric powder and water-soluble stain. Hoop is oiled and the inside is stained red. The Raven and Wolverine footprint are painted with oil color. Beater is made from birch root.

The drum is very sensual and powerful - and sure let's that be known.

Helenan rumpu Helena's drum

Helena sanoi kerran, että villisikarumpu olisi mahtava ja leikilläni sanoin, etten ala sellaista ainakaan karjun nahasta tekemään, se on aivan liian paksua. Viikko tästä emakkomme kuoli tapaturmaisesti ja kysyin Helenalta, vieläkö hän haluaa villisikarummun. Niinhän se on, että sitä saa, mitä tilaa.

           Nyljin ja suolistin emakon ja paloittelin ja annoin korpeille ja koiralle. Puhdistin nahasta uskomattoman määrän rasvaa ja liotin sen järvessä, kunnes karvat irtosivat kevyesti nyhtämällä. Hankin kehää varten tammea, mitäpä muutakaan. Kehän petsasin punaiseksi, kirkkaan veripunaiseksi. Kun rumpu oli kuivunut ja valmis, sain vuosien tauon jälkeen migreenikohtauksen ja kuukautiseni alkoivat varoittamatta (yleensä näen sen unessa), sitten nousi vielä kuume.

Ja sen lisäksi, että korpit ovat olleet erityisen aktiivisia rummun syntymisen aikana, sain tänään lahjaksi ystävältäni kaksi rummunkehää, jotka hän löysi ullakolta. Kaksi bodhran-kehää, toinen vihreä-kultainen.

Helena said once that a wild boar drum would be fantastic. I told her joking that I'm not going to make a drum out of a hog's skin, it's way too thick. The next week our wild boar sow died accidentally. I asked Helena if she still wanted to have a such drum. You get what you ask for...

        I skinned and gutted the sow and gave the meet to the raven and my dog. I soaked the skin in the lake as long as I could plug the hair out without too much effort. I got some oak for the hoop - what else could it be? When the drum was done and dry I had a migraine after many years, I started menstruating without any prior notice ( I usually see that happening in a dream) and got feverish.

The raven had been very active during the birth of the drum and on top of all the coincidendes today my friend wanted to give me a present: two drum hoops she found from the attic - two Irish Bodhran-hoops, one of those green and gold coloured.

Tässä rummussa on kolminkertainen kehä: ulkopuoli tammea, välissä koivua ja sisällä pihlajaa. Kalvo on poronnahkaa. Kuvioin sen värikynillä, Lyran puuväreillä ja lakkasin kuvion venelakalla.

  Rummusta tuli aika erilainen, kuin aiemmat (kuten joka kerta käy). Se on kevyt ja säkenöivä, aurinkoinen. Takana on heliseviä "jingle cone"ja, hopean ja kullan värisiä. Kapulan kun saan valmiiksi, on rumpu valmis uuteen kotiinsa.
 

There's a three layer hoop in Lyydia's drum: outside is oak, in the middle birch and inside rowan. I used colored pencils (Lyra) to draw the design on the reindeerskin and applied boat varnish over the drawing.

The drum is quite different from the others ( as they always are), it's light and radiant, sunny. I attached some silver and gold coloured jingle cones to the back side. as soon as the beater/mallet is done the drum is ready to go.

Rumpupuita Wood for hoops

Kaikilla puilla on oma luonteensa: tuntu, väri, ääni... Ja se, joka on yhdelle sopiva, ei välttämättä sovi toiselle. Eri puulajeja voi myös yhdistellä ja saada näin juuri sopivan, yksilöllisen kehän. Tässä kuvassa on päällimmäisenä tammea, sen alla koivua ja alimmaisena pihlajaa säänpieksemällä vanerilevyllä.

  Puut ovat menossa järveen likoon voidakseen muuttua rummunkehäksi.

Every tree has it's own nature: the feel, the colour, the sound... and the one that suits a person may not be the right one for an other. The different kinds of timber/wood can be combined to achieve the perfect and personalized hoop. In this picture you can see oak on the top, birch in the middle and rowan under that - all on weather-beaten plywood.

   These materials are going to the lake to be soaked and bent to a drumhoop.

Rumpu, joka odotti The Drum that waited

Minulla oli tammikehä, joka vain odotti. Eräänä päivänä lupasin tehdä helistimen ihmiselle, joka kaipasi jotain voimaesinettä. Mutta kehä halusi muuttua peurarummuksi.

Joten teinkin rummun, jonka maalasin hennalla. Kuvio ei näy selkeästi, mutta siinä on aurinko ja kuu.

I had an oak hoop that was just waiting. One day I promised a lady a rattle, she was in need of a talisman or an object that would give her positive energy. But the hoop wanted to be a deerdrum.

So I made her a drum. The henna painted design doesn't show clearly but there is the Sun and the Moon.

Erään rummun syntymä (osa 2) The Birth of Drum (part 2)

Tässä puuhassa luova ongelmanratkaisukykyni pääsi jälleen oikeuksiinsa - ongelmaa, jonka ratkaisin, ei ollut olemassakaan.

Tein kolmesta lasipurkista, Gorilla-teipistä, styroksista ja muusta löytämästäni kehikon voidakseni taivuttaa puut rumpukehää varten. Tästä rummusta piti tulla kolmiomainen, enkä usko, että tämän mallisia rumpuja haluaa syntyä niin montaa, että minun kannattaa tehdä varsinaista jigiä siihen tarkoitukseen.

My innovative mind was able to solve a problem that really didn't exist.

I used three glass jars, Gorilla tape, styrofoam and some other things I found to make a jig for bending the wood for the drum hoop. This drum was going to be triangular. I don't think I'm going to give life to many drums shaped like that, so there is no need to make a real jig for that.

Huolimatta siitä, että viritelmäni oli saamani kritiikin mukaan vähintäänkin säälittävä, kehästä tuli kaunis. Ei aivan symmetrinen, mutta juuri sellainen, kuin sen oli tarkoituskin olla.

Kehä on kolmesta kerroksesta. Sitä varten liotin n. 3 mm:n vahvuista leppää järvessä ja höyrytin yksi kerrallaan ja taivutin jigintekeleeni ympärille. Ensimmäisen kuivuttua vuorokauden taivutin toisen sen päälle. Sen kuivuttua vielä kolmannen.

Kun kaikki olivat kuivia, sahasin ne mittaansa ja liimasin kaksi sisimmäistä päällekkäin. Seuraavana päivänä liimasin uloimman kerroksen. Kun kehä oli kuivunut, hioin ja viimeistelin sen öljyämällä.

Even though my nice jig was told to be pitiful the hoop turned out just fine. Not exactly symmetrical but the way it was supposed to be.

The hoop is made of three about 3 mm strong layers of alder I soaked in the lake and steamed one by one. I bent the first one around my very, very creative jig and let it set and dry for a day. And then I bent another one over it. And the next day the third one.

After they were dried I sawed them to their measurements and glued the two inner layers together. And the next day I attached the outer layer as well. When the hoop was dried again I sanded and polished it and gave it the finishing touch by oiling it.

Seuraavaksi leikkasin liotetusta hirvennahasta  riittävän määrän nauhoja ja rumpukalvon.

The next task was to cut enough strings for the laceing and the drum skin itself from the soaked moose hide.

Rummusta tuli todella maskuliininen ja voimallinen.


I used natural henna for painting the drum. The design was given to me in a vision.

The drum feels very masculine and powerful.

Erään rummun syntymä, The Birth of a Drum

     Halusin kertoa, kuinka yksittäinen rumpu syntyy. Prosessi on peruspiirteissään sama, yksityiskohdat vaihtelevat. Sain jälleen Nickiltä luvan (suurkiitokset siitä!) jakaa kanssanne hänen rumpunsa syntymän.

Ensin oli selkeä tunne siitä, että hänelle kuuluu toinenkin rumpu. Minun on tehtävä se hänelle. Koiran kanssa kävellessäni pohdin asiaa ja kuinka ollakaan metsätien pielessä oli PetroCanada-tynnyri! En ollut ikinä aiemmin nähnytkään sellaista. Selkeä merkki - Nick asuu Kanadassa.

Seuraavaksi näin metsässä hirven. Oikeastaan en nähnyt elävää hirveä, vaan Hirven hengen, joka katsoi tiiviisti minuun. Tiesin, että Nickin tulee saada hirvirumpu. Erään perimätiedon mukaan on kahdenlaisia shamaaneja: poroshamaaneja ja hirvishamaaneja. Poroshamaaniksi ryhdytään, jos yhteisössä ei ole ketään shamaanin tehtäviä hoitamaan. Hirvishamaaniksi synnytään ja siihen kutsutaan, halusitpa tai et. Hengille ei voi laittaa vastaan.

Näin unessa millainen rummusta tulee: leppäkehä, kolmiomainen ja kalvossa kuviointi.

     I wanted to tell you how an individual drum is born. The basic process is always the same - details vary. Nick gave again his permission to share this tale - thanks a lot, Nick!

In the beginning I had this strong feeling that he should have also another drum. I was supposed to make that for him. Walking with my dog and thinking about the matter  I saw something unexpected: a PetroCanada labelled barrel on the side of this small road in the middle of the Finnish woods. I never had seen such barrel before. It was a clear sign: Nick lives in Canada and the word "barrel" could be substituted with word "drum" in some cases...

The next thing I noticed was a moose in the forest. Or actually it wasn't a real, live moose but the Moose Spirit gazing at me closely. I knew Nick was going to get a moosedrum. According to an old tradition there are two kinds of shaman: the reindeer shaman and the moose shaman. You can become a reindeer shaman if there is no one else to take the shamans duty in the community. A moose shaman is born and called to this commitment by the spirits - willing or not.

I was shown in a dream how the drum should be: a triangular hoop made of alder, the skin painted with a special design.

It was the end of the summer or early autumn.

I got hold of the skin in the winter, during the hunting season.

     Ja tältä nahka näytti, kun olin aloittanut sen puhdistamisen lihoista, rasvoista ja kalvoista.

     And this is how the skin looked like while I was scraping off the meet and the fat.

     Kaapimisen, johon minulla meni useita päiviä koiran istuessa uskollisesti vieressä makupalojen toivossa, jälkeen nahka jäi pakkaseen odottamaan kevättä ja jäiden lähtöä.

Kun ilma oli lämmennyt riittävästi, vein painavan vuodan rantaan likoon. Tällä kertaa laitoin sen tynnyriin.


     After the scraping, which took me several days - dog watching me optimistic and waiting for delicious treats - the hide was left in the cold and snow waiting for the spring and ice to melt from the lake.

When it was warm enough I took the heavy hide to the lake shore to be soaked. This time I placed it into a barrel.

     Nahka sai liota viileässä vedessä joitain viikkoja. Vaihdoin veden säännöllisesti estääkseni pahimman löyhkän. Yleensä heitän nahan järveen, jossa vesi virtaa vapaasti. Hirven nahka on märkänä painava ja todella tuskallinen nostaa ylös - siksi tynnyri.

     The skin was left to soak in the cool water for some weeks. The water was changed regularly to avoid stinking. Usually I throw the skins into the lake where the water runs free. The moose skin is very heavy when wet and a agony to pick up from the lake - that's why the barrel.

     Kun nahka oli näskääntynyt riittävästi ja karvat alkoivat irrota, nypin ne irti käsin. Pidempi näskääminen helpottaisi työtä, mutta haju on todella ikävä. Tähänkin vaiheeseen sain kulutettua päiviä... Käteni eivät kestä kylmää ja niveliäni särkee yksitoikkoinen repiminen.

     After the hide had rotten enough to make the hair come off I plugged it by hand. If I have left it to rotten for a longer time the task would have been easier - but the smell would be terrible. I spent days with this... My hands don't like the cold and my joints ache from the monotonous plugging.

     Lopulta sain nahan kuivumaan. Oli kevät.

     At last I could hang the skin to dry. It was spring.

Saijan pororumpu Saija's reindeerdrum

Solmuvärjäsin poronnahan käyttämällä vesiväriä. Valmiin rummun maalasin akryylimaalilla. Kuvassa on Elämän Puu.

Rummun kehä on pihlajaa, sisäpuolelle liimasin syksyisiä pihlajan lehtiä ja ripustin pienet kupari tiu'ut. Kehä on viimeistelty lakkaamalla.

Tälläkin rummulla on vahva luonne: vaikka kuinka monesti varmistin, että kehä on oikein päin, sen onnistui kääntyä. Rummun ääni on erikoinen, hopeisen metallinen. Tässä rummussa pidän siitä, että se on kevyt, mutta vahva matkatoveri.

The reindeerskin is knot-dyed with watercolour. I painted a Tree of Life image on the drum with acrylic paints.

The hoop is made of rowan and I glued some rowan leaves into the inside of the hoop before varnishing it. I hung some small copper bells to the inside as well.

This drum has also a strong charachter: no matter how many times I made sure that the hoop is right side up, it managed to turn the other way up. The sound of this drum is quite unique: silvery metallic. I like especially the lightness of the drum - and still it is a mighty and powerful companion for journeys.

Mentorini helistin My mentor's Rattle

Tein hirvennahkaisen helistimen mentorilleni lahjaksi. Varsi on kuusta, sidottu tervatulla nyörillä ja helisitmen sisällä on punaisia papuja. Ohra olisi ollut ehkä suomalaisempi vaihtoehto. Nyörin yläpuolella on hirvennahkasuikale.


Tällä helistimellä on parantavia ominaisuuksia.


I made a mooseskin rattle for my mentor. The handle is spruce and the rattle head is tied with tarred cord. Inside there are red beans -  barley had probably been more Finnish option. Above the tarred cord there is a strip of moose fur.


This rattle has healing properties.

Yksisarvisen laukku Unicorn's bag

Ompeleminen ei ole oikein minun juttuni, mutta tämän halusin ehdottomasti tehdä. Kantolaukku Yksisarviselle.


Sewing isn't exactly my cup of tea, but this was something I really wanted to do. Carryingcase for the Unicorn.

Tein aivan erityisen rummun. Yksisarvisen nahasta. Aivan, oikean, todellisen yksisarvisen nahasta.

Olen hieman pettynyt rummun ääneen, mutta siinä on jotain maagista. Näin unessa tai näyssä kuinka maalata valmis rumpu. Se on kullan värinen, pihlajakehäinen  ja munan muotoinen, kuin Kalevalassa. Osaisinhan minä tehdä pyöreänkin rummun, mutta tässä oli tärkeää antaa puun itse kertoa, mikä siitä tulee. Kapula on myös pihlajaa ja pää karhunnahkaa, jonka sain Steveniltä. Tuhannet kiitokset, Steven!


Kun lapset näkivät rummun, ensimmäinen kysymys oli, esittääkö kuvio Linnunrataa.


Ompelen sille vielä kantolaukun ja se on valmis. Haluan antaa sen eräälle erittäin tärkeälle ja voimalliselle ihmiselle.






I made a very special drum. Unicorndrum.  Honestly. I used real unicorn hide. 


I'm a bit disappointed with the sound of the drum - but it still is magical. I had a dream or a vision guiding me how to paint the drum. It's golden colour, hoop is made of rowan and shaped like an egg, like in Kalevala. I could make a round drum, if I wanted to, but this time it was important to let the wood lead me. The beater is made of rowan also, the tip is covered with bear fur Steven kindly gave me. Many thanks, Steven!


When the children first saw the drum, they asked if the image on it was the Milky Way.


I'll make a carrying bag for the drum and then it's ready to go. I want to give it to a very special and powerful person.

Nickin rumpu

Vihdoin olen saanut rumpukehän taivutettua ja kuivaksi. Koivu on mielenkiintoinen materiaali, kovaa ja siksi haurasta. Se ei taivu pakolla, vaan suostuttelemalla.


Kun taivutin puuta täysikuulla, hahmo seurasi vieressäni työn edistymistä. Nickin henkiopas, kenties. Ei minulle aiemmin tuttu. Koko piha tuntui olevan täynnä voimia...


Tänään haluan saada kehän hiottua valmiiksi ja kahvan kiinnitettyä. Kun se on tehty, laitan kuvan esille.


Saa nähdä, voiko tuota rumpua päästää lainkaan käsistään, siitäkin on tulossa todella mahtava ja voimakas... Alan kiintyä siihen turhan paljon.


Siinä on kiteytymässä moni asia, jotka elämässäni ovat näinä aikoina olleet pinnassa. Siksi tämän rummun kanssa on oltava tarkkana: siinä on mahdollisuus suureen hyvään ja suureen pahaan. Sen voima on neutraalia, käyttäjä määrittää tarkoituksellaan, onko se hyvä vai paha.

Cloud Spirit, my bear drum

Cloud Spirit is the bear drum that I named my web site (www.beardrum.com) after. The name was given to me on my first drumming session with this bear drum, as I was taken into the clouds in the Upper World.

I found a source for bear rawhide after 2 years of searching, and this is the first bear drum I made.

Near the center is a very amorphous animal. (What does it look like to you?)

If you step back, you might see two large wings centered toward the left of the drum. (Can you see the eagle?)

Moose Drum, my first drum

This is the very first drum I made. It is made with Moose Rawhide and has the image of a tribe and circles of dancers around a fire. I have used this drum in many ceremonies and in many healing sessions.

It seems so simple now, but making a first drum is very challenging. I had a great coach, but I was very nervous. Would it turn out well? Would it work for shaman journeys? Could I paint what I saw and felt?

Meeting the fantastic drum maker: Jonttu

I had the good fortune to meet Jonttu in the Spring of 2010. Jonttu is a fabulous drum maker. Since then, we have exchanged many ideas. We have also traded many items that are easily available to us in our own countries but difficult to otherwise obtain.

I am quite impressed with the reindeer drum Jonttu made for me! Jonttu put a huge amount of time and energy into this drum and made it with great ceremony on the Summer Solstice.
