Riikinkukko-rumpuni My Peacock Drum

Sain Tuulialta kaksi bodhran-rumpukehaa. Toinen oli vihrea. Jostain syysta tuntui, etta se puhutteli minua, niinpa hioin ja korjasin sen ja maalasin uudelleen tumman vihreaksi. Pingotin siihen poronnahan ja maalasin oljyvareilla Riikinkukon.


Tuulia gave me two bodhrain-frames, one of the green. For some reason it felt like it was for me so I dusted and fixed it and repainted dark green. I used oil paints to paint the Peacock on the reindeer skin.

Olen opiskellut netti-ryhmässä T. Thorn Coylen johdolla http://www.thorncoyle.com/ Elementtejä.

Tehdessäni Amin mäyrä-rumpua sain selvän vision omasta rummustani, minulta on puuttunut yhteiseen käyttöön sopiva rumpu. Visiossani oli Luonnottaren rumpu, vuohennahka, haapakehä. Kevyt ja ilmava, silti vahva.

Kun saimme Ilman päätökseen kurssillamme, oli rumpunikin valmis. Ja silloin vasta hoksasin: Luonnotar on Ilmatar! Olin tehnyt Ilman rummun, Ilmattaren.




I have been studying the Elements with T. Thorn Coyle http://www.thorncoyle.com/ in a web group.

While making Ami's badger drum I had a vision of my own drum, I have been lacking a drum suitable for using commonly. In the vision was drum of Luonnotar, goat skin, aspen hoop. Light and aerial, yet powerful.

When we got through Air in our course was the drum ready. And only then it struck me: Luonnotar is Ilmatar! I had made the Drum of Air, Ilmatar.

Paulin rumpu Paul's drum

Tämän rummun tein ystävälleni Paulille. Hän ehdottomasti tarvitsee rumpua!

Rummun kehä on kolminkertaista koivua, nahka poroa, jonka värjäsin kurkumalla ja petsillä. Kehä on ulkoa öljytty ja sisältä petsattu punaiseksi. Korpin ja ahman jäljen maalasin öljyvärillä. Rumpukapula on tehty koivun juuresta.

Rumpu on hyvin aistillinen ja vahva - ja todellakin tekee sen tiettäväksi.

I made this drum for my dear friend Paul. He really needs a drum!

The hoop is made of three layers of birch, the skin is reindeer dyed with turmeric powder and water-soluble stain. Hoop is oiled and the inside is stained red. The Raven and Wolverine footprint are painted with oil color. Beater is made from birch root.

The drum is very sensual and powerful - and sure let's that be known.

Amin mäyrärumpu Ami's badger drum

"Outo ilmoitus oudolle ihmiselle, olin töihin menossa ja täällä on tien vieressä mäyrä", jotakuinkin näin kertoi naurava ääni puhelimessa. Kävin hakemassa mäyrän talteen, nyljin, paloittelin ja vein korpeille. Nahasta tuli rumpu. Ihana rumpu. Eteenpäin vyöryävä energia, mutta kuitenkin tyyni.

Kehä ja kahva ovat käsittelemätöntä leppää, nahka on sidottu tervatulla nyörillä.


"Weird announcement for a weird person, I was just heading work and there's a badger on the side of the road", somewhat like this said a laughing voice on the telephone. I collected the badger, skinned, cut to pieces and fed to ravens. Skin made a drum. A wonderful drum. Very straight onward energy but still calm.

The hoop and handle are untreated alder, lacing tarred yarn.

Nyt se on koettu Been there, done that

         Olin Lohjan Menneen Ajan Joulumarkkinoilla viikonloppuna ystävättäreni kanssa myymässä vohveleita, glögiä, mehiläisvahakynttilöitä ja rumpuja.

Keli oli karmea. Lauantaina aamulla pystytimme kojun sateessa ja tuulessa. Perjantaina olin vakuuttanut tuttavalle, että odotettu myräkkä ei osu kohdalle. Hän väitti, että se tulee. Minä olin ehdottomasti sitä mieltä, että se ei ainakaan meidän kojumme kohdalle satu. Lauantai meni kurjassa säässä, mutta kojumme pysyi pystyssä.

Vasta illalla kotona likomärkänä huomasin, että eihän minun ole pakko tyytyä siihen, mitä annetaan! Voin pyytää parempaa. Ja pyysin. Koiraa kävelyttäessäni huomasin, että suuri kataja, toistakymmentä metriä korkea, jolta olin pyytänyt rumpumateriaaleja, oli kaatunut myräkässä. Olin saanut rumpupuuni. Pyysin myös parempaa ilmaa.

Sunnuntaiaamu oli kaunis, tyyni ja aurinkoinen. Kojukin oli paikoillaan, vaikka emme olleet millään tavoin kiinnittäneet sitä sen enempää.

Myimme vohvelit ja glögin loppuun.


I was at the Lohja Christmas Fair last weekend, selling waffles, glogg (traditional Scandinavian winterdrink), beeswax candles and drums with a friend.

The weather was horrible. On Saturday morning we put up our booth in rain and strong wind. On Friday I had convinced an acquaintance that the storm everybody was waiting for will not hit Lohja. He was certain it will. I strongly insisted that it won't anyway hit our booth. Saturday was awful, but in the end of hte day our booth was still standing.

Only in the evening, after returned home soaking wet, I realized that I don't need to just accept what I have been given! I can ask for better. So I did. While walking the dog I found this great juniper, well over 10 meters tall, fallen down in the storm. I had asked juniper's spirit for drum material and now I got it. I asked for better weather as well.

The Sunday morning was beautiful, sunny and clear. And the booth was still there, despite the fact we hadn´t anchored it any way.

We sold out all the waffles and glogg.

Joulumarkkinat Lohjalla

Olen ensi viikonloppuna Lohjan Joulumarkkinoilla, muutama "kevyt" rumpu mukanani. Mehiläisvahakynttilöitä ja vohveleita myymässä.

Marian rumpu Maria's drum

         Rummun kehä on ulkopuolelta haapaa ja sisältä pihlajaa. Kalvo on poroa, solmuvärjätty sienillä. Pohjantähti, Taivaannaula suojelee rumpua ja Aurinkopyörä on nousemassa taivaankannelle. Kuviot on maalattu öljyväreillä, kehälle on piirretty Kuun vaiheet, sidonta seuraa niitä: 1/4 yhtä sidontaa, 1/4 toista ja sama uudelleen.

Kehässä on Kuu, haapa ja Aurinko, pihlaja. Käsittelin sen mehiläisvahalla.

Rumpu tuntuu napakalta, suorastaan päällepäsmäriltä, sillä on suora energia, mutta myös huumorintajua - kunhan työt on hoidettu. Se on naisten rumpu, Kuun tyttärien.

The hoop is combined with aspen on the outside and rowan on the outside, the skin is reindeer and knot dyed   with mushroom. North Star is watching over the drum as Sun is climbing to the skies. I painted the design with oil colours. The laceing is following the Lunar cycle iluustrated on the out side of the loop: 1/4 laced in the first style, 1/4 in the second - and over again.

The Moon, aspen and the Sun, rowan are both in the beeswax finished hoop.

The drum has very vigorous and determined feeling, the energy is very straight forward but it still has a sense of humour - as long as the work is done properly. It's Women's Drum, drum of the Daughters of the Moon.

Helenan rumpu Helena's drum

Helena sanoi kerran, että villisikarumpu olisi mahtava ja leikilläni sanoin, etten ala sellaista ainakaan karjun nahasta tekemään, se on aivan liian paksua. Viikko tästä emakkomme kuoli tapaturmaisesti ja kysyin Helenalta, vieläkö hän haluaa villisikarummun. Niinhän se on, että sitä saa, mitä tilaa.

           Nyljin ja suolistin emakon ja paloittelin ja annoin korpeille ja koiralle. Puhdistin nahasta uskomattoman määrän rasvaa ja liotin sen järvessä, kunnes karvat irtosivat kevyesti nyhtämällä. Hankin kehää varten tammea, mitäpä muutakaan. Kehän petsasin punaiseksi, kirkkaan veripunaiseksi. Kun rumpu oli kuivunut ja valmis, sain vuosien tauon jälkeen migreenikohtauksen ja kuukautiseni alkoivat varoittamatta (yleensä näen sen unessa), sitten nousi vielä kuume.

Ja sen lisäksi, että korpit ovat olleet erityisen aktiivisia rummun syntymisen aikana, sain tänään lahjaksi ystävältäni kaksi rummunkehää, jotka hän löysi ullakolta. Kaksi bodhran-kehää, toinen vihreä-kultainen.

Helena said once that a wild boar drum would be fantastic. I told her joking that I'm not going to make a drum out of a hog's skin, it's way too thick. The next week our wild boar sow died accidentally. I asked Helena if she still wanted to have a such drum. You get what you ask for...

        I skinned and gutted the sow and gave the meet to the raven and my dog. I soaked the skin in the lake as long as I could plug the hair out without too much effort. I got some oak for the hoop - what else could it be? When the drum was done and dry I had a migraine after many years, I started menstruating without any prior notice ( I usually see that happening in a dream) and got feverish.

The raven had been very active during the birth of the drum and on top of all the coincidendes today my friend wanted to give me a present: two drum hoops she found from the attic - two Irish Bodhran-hoops, one of those green and gold coloured.

8-vuotias tyttäreni halusi antaa 11 vuotta täyttävälle veljelleen hienoimman tietämänsä lahjan. Autoin häntä tekemään rummun ohuesta mänytlastusta, josta hän liimasi kehän. Yhdessä petsasimme sen punaiseksi ja laitoimme sille poronnahan kalvoksi. ¨

Tytär pujotteli nyörin huolella ja auttoi kiristämisessä. Kalvo otti kauniisti väriä petsatusta puusta.

       Ja kyllä, tuo on tyttäreni tekemä, minä toimin vain assistenttina.


My 8 years old daughter wanted to give her brother the ultimate present to mark his 11th birthday. So she made him a drum using thin birch shavings that she glued together. I helped her to stain it red and put a piece of reindeerskin on it.

She did the laceing with great concern and helped me to tighten the skin. The stain gave the wet skin a wonderful colour.

   And yes, this drum is made by my daughter, I just assisted a bit.

Tässä rummussa on kolminkertainen kehä: ulkopuoli tammea, välissä koivua ja sisällä pihlajaa. Kalvo on poronnahkaa. Kuvioin sen värikynillä, Lyran puuväreillä ja lakkasin kuvion venelakalla.

  Rummusta tuli aika erilainen, kuin aiemmat (kuten joka kerta käy). Se on kevyt ja säkenöivä, aurinkoinen. Takana on heliseviä "jingle cone"ja, hopean ja kullan värisiä. Kapulan kun saan valmiiksi, on rumpu valmis uuteen kotiinsa.
 

There's a three layer hoop in Lyydia's drum: outside is oak, in the middle birch and inside rowan. I used colored pencils (Lyra) to draw the design on the reindeerskin and applied boat varnish over the drawing.

The drum is quite different from the others ( as they always are), it's light and radiant, sunny. I attached some silver and gold coloured jingle cones to the back side. as soon as the beater/mallet is done the drum is ready to go.

Rumpupuita Wood for hoops

Kaikilla puilla on oma luonteensa: tuntu, väri, ääni... Ja se, joka on yhdelle sopiva, ei välttämättä sovi toiselle. Eri puulajeja voi myös yhdistellä ja saada näin juuri sopivan, yksilöllisen kehän. Tässä kuvassa on päällimmäisenä tammea, sen alla koivua ja alimmaisena pihlajaa säänpieksemällä vanerilevyllä.

  Puut ovat menossa järveen likoon voidakseen muuttua rummunkehäksi.

Every tree has it's own nature: the feel, the colour, the sound... and the one that suits a person may not be the right one for an other. The different kinds of timber/wood can be combined to achieve the perfect and personalized hoop. In this picture you can see oak on the top, birch in the middle and rowan under that - all on weather-beaten plywood.

   These materials are going to the lake to be soaked and bent to a drumhoop.

Rumpu, joka odotti The Drum that waited

Minulla oli tammikehä, joka vain odotti. Eräänä päivänä lupasin tehdä helistimen ihmiselle, joka kaipasi jotain voimaesinettä. Mutta kehä halusi muuttua peurarummuksi.

Joten teinkin rummun, jonka maalasin hennalla. Kuvio ei näy selkeästi, mutta siinä on aurinko ja kuu.

I had an oak hoop that was just waiting. One day I promised a lady a rattle, she was in need of a talisman or an object that would give her positive energy. But the hoop wanted to be a deerdrum.

So I made her a drum. The henna painted design doesn't show clearly but there is the Sun and the Moon.

Erään rummun syntymä (osa 2) The Birth of Drum (part 2)

Tässä puuhassa luova ongelmanratkaisukykyni pääsi jälleen oikeuksiinsa - ongelmaa, jonka ratkaisin, ei ollut olemassakaan.

Tein kolmesta lasipurkista, Gorilla-teipistä, styroksista ja muusta löytämästäni kehikon voidakseni taivuttaa puut rumpukehää varten. Tästä rummusta piti tulla kolmiomainen, enkä usko, että tämän mallisia rumpuja haluaa syntyä niin montaa, että minun kannattaa tehdä varsinaista jigiä siihen tarkoitukseen.

My innovative mind was able to solve a problem that really didn't exist.

I used three glass jars, Gorilla tape, styrofoam and some other things I found to make a jig for bending the wood for the drum hoop. This drum was going to be triangular. I don't think I'm going to give life to many drums shaped like that, so there is no need to make a real jig for that.

Huolimatta siitä, että viritelmäni oli saamani kritiikin mukaan vähintäänkin säälittävä, kehästä tuli kaunis. Ei aivan symmetrinen, mutta juuri sellainen, kuin sen oli tarkoituskin olla.

Kehä on kolmesta kerroksesta. Sitä varten liotin n. 3 mm:n vahvuista leppää järvessä ja höyrytin yksi kerrallaan ja taivutin jigintekeleeni ympärille. Ensimmäisen kuivuttua vuorokauden taivutin toisen sen päälle. Sen kuivuttua vielä kolmannen.

Kun kaikki olivat kuivia, sahasin ne mittaansa ja liimasin kaksi sisimmäistä päällekkäin. Seuraavana päivänä liimasin uloimman kerroksen. Kun kehä oli kuivunut, hioin ja viimeistelin sen öljyämällä.

Even though my nice jig was told to be pitiful the hoop turned out just fine. Not exactly symmetrical but the way it was supposed to be.

The hoop is made of three about 3 mm strong layers of alder I soaked in the lake and steamed one by one. I bent the first one around my very, very creative jig and let it set and dry for a day. And then I bent another one over it. And the next day the third one.

After they were dried I sawed them to their measurements and glued the two inner layers together. And the next day I attached the outer layer as well. When the hoop was dried again I sanded and polished it and gave it the finishing touch by oiling it.

Seuraavaksi leikkasin liotetusta hirvennahasta  riittävän määrän nauhoja ja rumpukalvon.

The next task was to cut enough strings for the laceing and the drum skin itself from the soaked moose hide.

Rummusta tuli todella maskuliininen ja voimallinen.


I used natural henna for painting the drum. The design was given to me in a vision.

The drum feels very masculine and powerful.
